A Letter of Appreciation- NPHC did an impromptu community service during the
2010 Greek Retreat
I was leading at retreat for High School students at YMCA Camp Lett’s in February which happened to be the same weekend that National Pan-Hellenic Council from Morgan State University gathered there. We had scheduled a talent show for Saturday night, and somehow my students ended up finding out that members of your group were steppers and asked them if they would participate in our talent show. I was excited about this opportunity, although slightly fearful that the kids would be disappointed if the college students ended up being unavailable at the time of our talent show. Thankfully, a representative from the group came up to right before the talent show and asked if it was okay they performed. I said we’d be delighted if they would. A fraternity member stepped up to the mic and talked about Historically Black Colleges and Universities and Morgan State. Then member from each organization gave background information on his or her organization and its mission. And finally they danced, and it was wonderful. Fabulous! The sisters and brothers inspired my kids, and were a surprise blessing for our weekend. I am so glad that my high school students were exposed to the passion and fun so evident on the faces of the Greek students, so palpable in the air as they stepped. My students saw that passion and fun can go hand in hand with values and purpose and helping people. As a Christian minister and in particular as an Episcopal priest, I try to teach the young folks I work with to respect the dignity of every human being and to seek and serve Christ in their neighbor. But I don’t always manage to do it in a way that connects with their culture and way of life. The members of the Panhellenic Council made that connection, and I wanted to let you know how grateful I feel for their offering of their time and talents.
Peace, and many blessings on the good work you all are up to!
